Remembering Margaret

Margaret Elaine “Maggie” Thompson, 76, passed away peacefully at home on September 24, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on April 12, 1948, in Charleston, South Carolina, Maggie built a life filled with family, faith, and service to her community.

Maggie shared 42 wonderful years of marriage with her late husband, Charles “Charlie” Thompson. Together they raised two children, Emily Rivera and Thomas Thompson, and later welcomed three grandchildren — Lucas, Sofia, and Henry — who brought her endless joy.

For more than 35 years, Maggie was a dedicated elementary school teacher, remembered for her patience, creativity, and encouragement. In retirement, she continued giving back through her volunteer work at the Portland Community Food Bank, her mentorship of young teachers, and her joyful voice in the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church choir.

Maggie will be remembered for her warm smile, her love of gardening and peach cobbler, and her gift for making people feel truly seen. Her kindness and steady presence touched the lives of her family, friends, and countless others, leaving a legacy that will be cherished always.

Tributes & Memories

Grandma always called me “Buddy” and made me feel like I could do anything. I’ll never forget our fishing trips, or how she’d pretend to enjoy my “famous” burnt pancakes just to make me proud.

She never missed one of my baseball games. Rain or shine, she was there in the stands, cheering louder than anyone. I’ll carry that kind of support with me forever.

We met in the teacher’s lounge in 1978. I was new and nervous, and Maggie came over with that signature smile and said, “You’re with me for lunch.” From that day on, she was my partner in lesson plans, school events, and life in general.

Maggie had a way of finding the bright side, even on the longest school days. We’d be knee-deep in grading papers, and she’d crack a joke or share a story that had me laughing until my sides hurt. She made work lighter, but she also made life richer.

I’ll miss our late-night phone calls and our “just one more cup” afternoons. She was the kind of friend you can’t replace, and I am so grateful for the decades we had together.

Maggie’s voice was a blessing in our choir. Warm, steady, and full of joy. More than her singing, it was her spirit that inspired us. She lived her faith in quiet, everyday moments, and that example will stay with our congregation for years to come.

Mom, you were my safe place. You taught me that kindness is strength, and that no matter how busy life gets, there’s always time to share a cup of tea. I can still picture you at the kitchen table, the steam rising from your mug, ready to listen without judgment.

You had a gift for making every person feel like the most important person in the room. I saw it in the way you talked to neighbors, to the grocery store clerk, even to strangers who’d just met you. You made people feel seen. Truly seen.

Thank you for every story, every hug, and every quiet moment you gave me. Your love is the foundation I stand on, and I will carry your lessons with me for the rest of my life.

Maggie was the heart of our garden club. She didn’t just grow flowers, she grew friendships. Every Saturday morning, she’d show up with a basket of muffins and a story that made us all laugh before we’d even started planting.

She taught me that gardening isn’t just about the blooms, it’s about the people you share them with. My marigolds will always carry her memory, bright and warm like she was.

Mom had a simple rule: “Leave a place better than you found it.” She lived that in every interaction, in every act of service. It’s a lesson I’ll do my best to pass down to my own kids.
